Comments about HTD HD-R80 High Definition In-Ceiling Speakers:

I have 10 pairs of speakers on 6 zones - with a number of dual speaker zones.
The sound throughout the house is better quality than from my high priced sound system, with the exception of the sub-woofer content (I do not have sub-woofers throughout the house.)
The sound is clear at loud and soft volumes.
One of the outside speakers got washed with a contractor pressure washer - I let it dry for a few days before using it, but it shows no sign of deterioration.
I installed the system myself and packed the joist spaces with fibregalss - sounds great and has solid lows and highs. I have not heard anything better at 2 or 3 times the price.

Service & Delivery comments:

HTD excellence for service, delivery, etc. The folks there did all sorts of special handling for me. Shipping across the border was no problem either.

Comments about HTD HD-R80 High Definition In-Ceiling Speakers:

I got about 10 pairs of HD speakers (8.5" and the 6.5") along with the whole house audio system (MC-66). The 8.5" speakers are simply the best - very powerful, with clear sound, and excellent base. These sound much better than other bookshelf speakers that I have (PSBs). It really fills the room if in-ceiling. Have used it a lot for parties and everyone is impressed with the quality of sound.

The only change that I would have made in hindsight is go for all 8.5" HD speakers rather a few 6.5" HD speakers throughout the house.

As advertised.

Set up a surround system with these speakers and two HD W65 Ceiling speakers. Installation was pretty straight forward, although the holes cut from the templates were consistently small. Tip - use the templates and cut tight to the drawn line leaving the line on the cut-out piece. This will give you the proper size hole. If you cut on the line, the hole will be too small. On 4 out of 5 speakers the locking tabs worked perfectly. On one speaker I had difficulty getting the tabs to swivel properly but in the end succeeded. I painted the grills with a small sprayer. Paint had to be thinned quite a bit less than recommended. Make sure you do a test spray. I also removed the fabric liners from the grills before painting. This is not part of the instructions but I did not want to plug up the fabric with paint. The liners were touchy to remove but went back in very easily. The end result is a very clean looking install which is what I was after.

With the fiberglass insulation behind each speaker, the sound is very good, and there are no rattles. The speakers are tight and solid in the wall. I am very pleased.

Shipping and communication with the company was top notch. It was great to know the duty and tax charges up front rather than being surprised by them at the delivery end. Good product. Good company. I would definitely buy these again.

Home Theater Direct Response: Thanks for the detailed review. In an online "tip" we mention temporarily removing the acoustically transparent cloth (HD line only) when painting. But I was surprised, as were you, to discover that this bit of information was left out of the owner's manual. We'll make sure that gets corrected before the next printing. Thank you for pointing this out!

Comments about HTD HD-R80 High Definition In-Ceiling Speakers:

I bought these surrounds to complete my 5.1 set up which comprises Polk RTI4 mains, Premier Acoustics center channel powered by a Yamaha receiver. I don't have a subwoofer and I don't intend to get one (room aesthetics), not with the excellent bass response I'm getting with this setup. The excellent reviews of these speakers were right on the money and I feel like I've made the right decision in going with the 8'' woofer as opposed to the 6.5". The salesperson I spoke to recommended the 8" speaker for use without a subwoofer and based on the excellent bass response…he was right! I put insulation in the ceiling after cutting out the drywall and set the woofer switch to maximum and the tweeter switch to minimum to minimize brightness. I originally thought about getting the Yamaha 3 way in ceiling speaker which also got some good reviews but nowhere near as many as this speaker pair. With this set up I'm really enjoying listening to music in 5 channel stereo. I popped in a DVD the other night and was quite impressed with the surround sound effects including the bass response.
